Professor Charles Delstanche (1840-1900), was the first doctor in Belgium to specialise in otology. He was born in Brussels and before embarking on his life-long career dealing with ears, he devoted considerable time fighting the terrible cholera epidemic of 1866.
In 1875 he set up the first Belgian otology department where he developed several important medical instruments and methods, some of which are still in use today. There is the Delstanche Ring, an eardrum-massager and a tool for removing tonsils.
