Jef Scherens (1909-1988) was born in Werchter, Belgium and is known for having the greatest acceleration ever in track sprinting.
"The Cat" as he was called, was the first cyclist to win six consecutive world championships (1932-1937) in the same event before placing second to Arie Van Vliet of The Netherlands in 1938. He had also been third in 1931.
He had a very long career, winning his last world title in 1947, 15 years after his first, and if it had not been for World War II, he might have won several more titles.
