Ulla Werbrouck was probably the most successful Belgian judoka in the 1990s.
Between 1994 and 2001 she won no less than seven European titles and added six medals to her portfolio. She also won four medals at several World Championships but never managed to win the coveted title of World Champion. She lost in the final to Sibelis Veranes in both 1995 and 1999.
The highlight of her career came in 1996, when she defeated Japan's Yoko Tanabe by ippon in the Olympic final. She was coached by the successful Belgian judo coach Jean-Marie Dedecker.
Werbrouck quit in 2002 following a loss in the Paris tournament, where she won three times previously. When her former coach, Dedecker, formed his own political party in 2007, Werbrouck joined him and was elected into the Belgian Chamber of Representatives.
